Independent Reviewer for Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

* I received this book from Xpresso Book Tours in return for a fair and honest review. *

Wow. This book blew me away. It left me speechless, which is hard to do if you know me. It was absolutely a beautifully written story that deserves to be read and shared by all avid readers. Once I finished the story I found myself googling and searching to find more books to read by this author, but I was saddened but excited to find this is her first story.  I definitely think there are great things to come from this author.

This story is pretty raw and uncut. The characters are real and have flaws. They have tragedy in their past and they have families that are far from perfect. These character face realistic challenges and experiences. They are far from perfect.  I couldn’t have imagined reading a better written story dealing with these characters and chain of events.

I found myself being able to relate to certain parts of the story and relate to characters off and on throughout.  It might have resurfaced some of my own memories that have been pushed to the back of my mind but even that didn’t knock my feeling of this book. It’s not a sugary sweet story.  The characters have to fight for what they want, what they have, and what they believe in.

The details and descriptions allow for ease of reading and ease of being able to picture the scenes and really immerse yourself into the story. They make it easy to understand and picture some of the things going on in the story. They allow you in to visualize some of the hurt and pain the character’s experience.

There were times I just “knew” what was going to happen. It just had to happen like that. Then there would be a twist in the story that made me think otherwise. Then something else would happen that would change my mind.  It was like this throughout the story. I don’t know about you but when writers do this it just grabs me even deeper into the story.  If I could have I would have read this story in one sitting but sadly life didn’t allow me to do it but you can bet, I read it as fast as I could. I was sad to see it end but I would recommend the story to you without a second guess.

BOOK BLITZ & #GIVEAWAY - It's Always Complicated by Julia Kent

It’s Always Complicated
Julia Kent
Publication date: April 27th 2016
Genres: Adult, Contemporary

 Goodreads

Take two men, one woman, three children. Stir in one best friend and her fiancé doctor. Whisk one best friend’s niece, her two rock star boyfriends, and add a grizzled old octogenarian diner owner with a naughty mouth and her eighty-something boyfriend who loves every minute of her.
Put them all in a campground in northern Maine where the owners’ daughter has two special men of her own. Bake for 400 pages.
It’s Always Complicated is the sprawling saga of how Laura, Mike and Dylan (Her Billionaires) and Josie and Alex (It’s Complicated) have the wedding of a lifetime at Escape Shores Campground (the Obedient series) while Darla, Trevor and Joe (the Random series) make an appearance with a cast of characters that includes cameos from the Warlock Waitress and maybe…just maybe…Mavis the Chicken.
This book combines three of Julia Kent’s series in a madcap spectacle that yields one universal truth: love is a journey and not a destination, but people will drive you crazy along the way.
Enjoy the ride.

A small crowd of men wearing gun holsters ran past Josie and Alex, followed by three uniformed TSA agents.
“I wonder what that’s about?” Alex marveled, his eyes tracking the fracas. He and Josie had come to the Portland, Maine airport to pick up her mother, Marlene, and Aunt Cathy, Uncle Mike and her new Uncle Calvin. All the Ohio relatives were here for her and Alex’s wedding.
A cold wave of dread washed over her. They were running toward the baggage claim for the airline her entire family was on.
“I’ll bet it’s my mother,” she groaned, leaning against him for support. His strong arm wrapped around her shoulders and gave her the comfort she needed. Too bad he couldn’t give her a second backbone made of steel.
If he could, she knew, he would. The thought made her smile.
“I’m sure it’s nothing,” he said, giving her a squeeze. She looked up at him. Way up, given the enormous height difference between the two of them. His warm, brown eyes met hers and for an instant, she wondered if he might be right. That eternally positive outlook he had was a bit infectious.
Maybe she needed to stop assuming the worst of every situation.

A rotund security guard huffed and puffed, running past them, holding what looked like a spare uniform. He was talking into a walkie-talkie.
“Naked?” Huff huff. “She’s naked? What size?” Huff huff.
Alex’s kind eyes filled with alarm. It was both charming and horrifying. Josie couldn’t quite decide which impression she enjoyed more. There was a kind of schadenfreude in realizing she was right. His idealism was sweet, but sometimes she needed him to be more of a realist.
And Marlene served up an entire buffet of realism.
“Mile High Club again?” the guard asked, pausing to catch his breath. Josie watched him with a morbid fascination.
“You don’t really think it’s your mom in there, Josie,” Alex said. He caressed her shoulder absent-mindedly, watching the guard. “I mean—”
“Two men in one bathroom with a naked woman?” the guard barked into his walkie-talkie, eyebrows hitting the brim of his hat.
Josie snorted, the sense of dread spreading.
“How could it be anyone else?”
“That sounds more like something Darla would do,” Alex said. “You sure she’s still in Boston and not on this flight?”
Just as Josie was about to reply, the commotion got louder.
“MARLENE!” Josie heard the sense of outrage in her Aunt Cathy’s voice. The airport was small, but not that small. Cathy’s voice could carry. “WHAT IN THE HELL HAPPENED TO YOUR CLOTHES?”

EXCERPT TOUR & #GIVEAWAY - When the Serpent Bites (The Starks Trilogy #1) by Nesly Clerge

GENRE

Crime fiction, psychological thriller

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Frederick Starks has it all—a gorgeous wife who was his high school sweetheart, three beautiful children, a mansion and cars others envy, millions in the bank, respected in his community, admired by his employees, loved and respected by loyal friends. He revels in the hard-earned power and control he’s acquired. As the saying goes, “All that glitters is not gold,” which Starks discovers when gut-wrenching betrayal by his wife sends him over the edge and into a maximum security prison. There, Starks is a new “fish,” stripped of nearly everything he’s always relied on. In that place, where inmates and guards have their own rules and codes of conduct, Starks is forced to face the darker side of life, and his own darker side, especially when the betrayals, both inside and outside the prison, don’t stop. He must choose which path to follow when the line between right and wrong becomes blurred: one that leads to getting out of the physical and emotional hellhole he finds himself in or one that keeps him alive.
Starks left the session confused, wondering if it was a joke. He’d expected questions about why he’d attacked Boen Jones, and why he’d tried to kill himself, among all the other probing questions he’d anticipated and dreaded.
The steel door of his cell clanged shut behind him. He stayed standing where he was and let his eyes scan the confined space. He chuckled, but not in amusement.
What a system.
His thoughts had led him to try to kill himself, and what did the system do? They put him in even more solitary confinement twenty-three hours a day, where his thoughts could eat at him from the inside one tearing bite at a time. He was relieved that, so far, they didn’t know about his small treasure—the six-inch metal ruler lifted from the infirmary doctor’s desk. The failed suicide attempt hadn’t been a complete waste. He’d pretended his foot itched and hidden the ruler in one of his shoes. Every night when overhead lights were dimmed at eleven, he lay on his side, facing the wall. The metal strip would be removed from the slit he’d made in the underside of the mattress cover, right at the seam, where it wouldn’t be obvious. Pretend snores covered the sound as he whittled metal against concrete, until he got drowsy. Then he’d slide the ruler back into its hiding place. A slow process, for sure, but soon he’d have a proper shank. If the guard on the other side of the camera noticed the subtle arm movements made in the dimmed light . . . well, let him think whatever he wanted to about that. When the shank was sharp enough, he’d use it.
Also sharp was the loneliness. It led him to ask himself questions like why had he fallen in love with and married Kayla. He’d loved and trusted her, and she repaid him by proving she was nothing more than a harlot. He’d been through everything with her. Had sacrificed so much for her. And this place—this life—was the end result of all he’d done. For her.
Thinking about her led to thoughts of Ozy and all that her involvement with him had resulted in, how many lives had been irrevocably altered.
He choked on the pain.
“Now we’re getting somewhere.”
He stares down at me for a very long time. His gaze feels heavy, and after what feels like forever, he gets up and walks into the semicircular room with the table of torture. My anxiety spikes tenfold as I hear the opening and closing of drawers. I almost get up and dart into the bathroom, but Kayne returns before I can force my limbs to move. He stands above my mostly naked body. Two pairs of handcuffs dangling in one hand.
“You’ve been a good girl. Time for a treat.” His breath is ragged as he drops to his knees. I squirm away, but he grabs my legs and fastens one handcuff to each ankle.
“Give me your hands.” I don’t move.
“Ellie.” He says my name harshly. “Do you want me to turn you over and spank you instead? Pleasure or pain. Your choice. It doesn’t matter to me either way. I like giving both.”
He reaches over me and grabs my right hand, securing it to the handcuff on my right ankle.
“Kayne, please,” I beg, as he repeats the motion with my left side. I’m bound.
Completely helpless.
No matter which way I move, the restraints act like marionette strings biting into my skin. Pulling one of my wrists up, my leg follows. Pull my ankle down, my arm gets yanked.
I’m gasping with fear.
Kayne hovers over me. My senses on overload.
I tremble as I stare up at him. His eyes are fierce, lustful, wanton, and unrepentant. I know exactly what he wants.
Me.
“Tell me you don’t want me to touch you,” he dares me.
“I don’t want you to touch me.” The words flow, but there’s no fire behind them.
“Are you sure, kitten?” He massages me over the thin fabric of my panties.
“Yes.” No.
“I think you do.” He slides my panties over and I squirm harder in the restraints. My heartbeat palpitating. The metal clinking as I shift. He circles his finger gently over my clit. I close my eyes trying to reject his touch. When he sinks his finger inside me, I gasp.
“You’re so fucking wet for me.” He slides his finger in and out, every so often spreading the slickness through my folds. My body tightens and aches, but I fight the urges he’s bringing forth. I will not come. I will not give this man my pleasure. Kayne works his hand faster, insistent. The sensations build and I clench my fists, fighting the orgasm he’s demanding. As if aware I’m resisting, he simultaneously rubs my swollen clit with his thumb while he fingers me relentlessly. I moan uncontrollably.
No! No! No!
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Just before I explode, Kayne removes his hand, and I nearly weep.
“Not yet, kitten. I didn’t give you permission.” If I wasn’t bound, I’d slap him. “I tell you when to come. Understand?” I’m panting beneath him, burning a hole through his head with my stare. He smirks arrogantly at me. Then leans down and whispers, taunting me, “Ask my permission.”
“No.”
“You’ll regret that.” There’s amusement in his eyes. This is all just a game. With no warning at all, he rips my panties. The thin material tearing right in two. I jerk, the metal cuffs cutting into my skin. He skims his tongue down the inside of one of my thighs, and then licks a slow hot drag over my slit.
“Fuck, you taste so good. Like cupcakes,” he pants. His specific description isn’t lost on me. A simple cupcake is how all this began.
Kayne swirls his tongue over my heated flesh, nipping and sucking, driving me mad. My body is bowing in ecstasy, my mind trying to reject the pleasure. If I give in, what will that mean?
Kayne stabs his tongue into my entrance, and I moan loudly. Oh God, an orgasm is looming; hot and fast.
“Ask permission.” His hot breath skims against my overly sensitive skin. I resist. Fighting him the only way I can. With my will.
He sinks a finger deep inside me and sucks on my clit, bringing me right to the breaking point. My heart is hammering and so is my core.
“Ask permission. The way I told you,” he orders.
I’m writhing in my restraints so hard I know I’m going to have marks, but I need to disperse the buildup somehow. I can barely breathe as he dangles me over the edge again and again, yet another form of torture to get me to obey. I feel the slightest caress of my orgasm, and I fracture, unable to withstand the torment anymore. “Please, Kayne, may I come!” I scream out.
He chuckles. That fucking bastard.
“Yes, you may, kitten.” He attacks me, fingering me swiftly while lavishing my clit. I splinter in every direction, my climax shredding me to pieces. I pull on the handcuffs—the pain as potent as the pleasure—as I writhe and moan. When the quake dissipates, I’m left limp on the floor, breathing raggedly and close to tears. Kayne brushes his face against my inner thigh, smearing my arousal all over my skin.
“Good, kitten,” he patronizes, rising to his knees, unbuttoning his shirt slowly. I stare up at him dazed. Inch by inch, he bares his chest, then tosses his shirt on the floor. He’s sculpted and lean, a demonic perfection. Several tattoos adorn his body, a compass on his left pec, barbed wire dripping with blood around his arm, and a quote written across his rib cage. ‘A certain kind of darkness is needed to see the stars.’
When he starts to unbuckle his belt, I tense. He doesn’t say a word as he sheds the rest of his clothes, but the energy in the room is unmistakable. It’s thick with sex and lust.
He said he wouldn’t rape me. He said he wouldn’t rape me. I repeat the mantra trying to stay calm. Once he’s as bare as me, Kayne hovers over my bound body, bracing his hands on each side of my head.
“Who owns you, Ellie?” He stares down at me with his majestic eyes.
“You do,” I answer reluctantly.
“That’s right.” He kisses my jaw softly.
“What do I want?”
I swallow hard. “My obedience, my submission, my body.” The words barely come out as a whisper.
“Right again.” He brings his mouth to mine, skimming his tongue along my lower lip.
“Can I fuck you, Ellie?”
“No, Kayne.” I fight back the tears.
“Fine.” He kisses me tenderly. Rolling his tongue against mine, allowing me to taste myself on his lips.
His change in demeanor is unexpected. I don’t understand it one bit. My defenses stand at attention. Kayne then shifts, grabbing his erection with one hand and moving down to take one of my nipples into his mouth. Swirling his tongue against me, he strokes himself, lightly at first and then more urgently. As his jerks become stronger, so does the pressure of his mouth, nipping and sucking my nipple as he works himself to a climax. There’s nothing I can do. There’s no place I can go tethered beneath him. He bites my nipple as he comes, sending a shock of pain straight through my body. I strain, helpless as he comes on my stomach. His groans vibrating against my breast. He releases my abused nipple once he’s finished. It’s red and swollen.
“Mine,” he declares victoriously against my lips, like he just marked his territory. Then he kisses me hard and unapologetically, making my head spin.
When he’s finished with my mouth, I drop my head to the side, exhausted. My emotions are a shitstorm inside of me. There are too many to even process at the moment. So I just shove them all away.
Sacrifice or salvation? A chosen psychic few may be both. As the city's Keepers battle Betrayers to save the human race, all's not fair in love and war.
Nick Geary, jaded clan leader of human guardians, the Keepers, is doomed to love a human woman who’s forgotten him, time after time, for thirteen years: Libby Klink, a skittish accountant who’s as terrified of her recent and strange intuitions as she is of her mundane existence.
When Nick is ordered by the clan’s guiding force to seek Libby’s help in defending the clan against enemy Betrayers, romance sizzles as the pair forms an unlikely alliance in their desperate search to discover the key to the clan’s salvation—which Libby alone holds.
4 out of 5 (very good)
This story starts with a human woman in a dead-end job, suffering on a minute-by-minute basis with severe anxiety. Her life changes when she is stuck in a traffic-jam and a stranger taps on her car window.
This book is full of heartbreak and hope. I can't imagine how hard it was for Nick to lose Libby time and time again! Libby is a strong character, who initially appears weak as self-doubt rules her.
The Keeper is the first of a new series that I can't wait to read more of. Every character is well-rounded and developed. The storyline is smoothly paced, building to the climax, with shocks and surprises throughout. Looking forward to continuing with this series and definitely recommended!
* I received this book from Barclay Publicity / NetGalley in return for a fair and honest review. *
 Her index finger found the button and lowered the window a crack.
Immediately, he raised his hands. “I’m not going to hurt you. I’m unarmed.”
Always good to hear. She cocked her head, perplexed. “Who are you?”
“Nick Geary.” Unsmiling, a muscle worked in his jaw. He held her hostage with his eyes. “We need to talk.”
Her heart tripped. No doubt about it. She’d never heard of any Nick Geary, never seen this man before in her life. Or had she? Why didn’t she know? Shouldn’t she? What could they possibly need to talk about? A new kind of panic engulfed her. She pounced on the button, closed the window, and laid on her horn.
Scowling, he mouthed some kind of oath.
The driver door swung open on the truck in front of her. A portly man with a bush of a gray beard got out, lumbered over. Squinted at her. “You okay?” he bellowed as he tugged a T-shirt sporting a Confederate flag over his girth. “This guy messin’ with you?”
Yeah, he was messing with her all right. Air. She needed air. She locked eyes with Nick. His were blue and crystalline, as placid as they’d been stormy. He reached around his neck to finger a shiny stone the green of spring grass, nestled under his collar on what appeared to be a thin leather strap.
It glowed with ember-like intensity. She watched, fascinated.
I-279 South, idling engines, the car radio somewhere behind her booming its bass—all of it receded like floodwater after a storm.
Libby stood on the porch of the cabin she and her father rented for a week every summer. He came around the corner, fairly glowing. Pink with health. Dad. He slung a fishing rod over his shoulder and winked. “Let’s go catch us a mess of crappies.” The creek, ten feet away, rushed over rocks and fallen trees, its path clear, sure. The sun warmed her face and the air soothed her. She breathed in the scent of earth, burgeoning with spring.
She blinked. Snippets of music and phone conversations littered the highway around her. Libby gaped, unable to speak, like she’d shot down a hill on a roller coaster and banked the curve of the next.
Nick said nothing, his eyes still locked on hers.
Ford Truck shot him a dirty look, then clambered over to her side of the car. “Lady, I said, you okay?” he yelled.
Shaking, she lowered her window, not sparing him a glance. “Yeah, yeah, I’m okay.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah.”
Muttering something about the country going to hell in a handbasket, Ford Truck stomped back to his pickup and climbed inside.
Still staring at Nick, she clung fast to her resolve before it escaped her. Reaching across the seat, she yanked on the handle, and pushed open the passenger door.
“Get in.”
