I wake with a start, sitting straight up in bed.

What the hell was that?

My heart is pounding to the point that’s all I perceive as I strain to hear a repeat of the sound that woke me. I’m not sure, but I think someone was screaming my name like a banshee. Was that what woke me or was I just dreaming?
I look at the bedside clock as I slide out of bed. I’ve only been asleep for an hour. I glance around as I step slowly to the windows in the living room. Looking out to the front of the cabin, the clearing and woods beyond are visible, bathed in the glow of the full moon that now sits high in the early morning sky. Nothing seems out of the norm, but how can I really be sure since this is my first night here at the cabin?

I cross the room and step up into the kitchen, stopping in front of the French doors leading out to the back of the cabin. My eyes scour the future yard before sweeping the tree line. It looks as barren and empty as the front. I unlock and open the door; the only sound is the distant crow of a rooster. Stepping down onto the cinderblock that serves as a back step, I listen intently as my eyes survey the woods again.

Something moves or shifts, and my gaze flashes right back to the far left-hand corner of the lot.

What the—

There’s an unusual shape against one of the tree trunks. I keep my eyes trained on the spot as I take another step down off the cinderblock. It’s hard to tell—
I squint as I take another step wishing I had a flashlight.

Holy shit!

The dark shape is a silhouette, an outline of someone or some—thing. It blends in perfectly in a manner that says this is its natural state. This is how it conceals itself.

I panic, unable to step back into the house as all of my senses are screaming for me to do.

My eyes stay glued to the spot as I realize the shadow extends beyond the trunk. It’s not completely in front of the tree, and that’s how I was able to see it, to begin with. The shadow is tall and slim. It looks like it has long hair that lifts, flowing around its form in the soft breeze, blending in with the constant movement of leaves and vegetation that’s so normal in the woods, you would usually pay it no heed.

As I stand there watching it, I know it’s watching me right back. I can feel its eyes on me.

It’s not a good feeling.

SO!!! Do you know how long I've waited for this book?? do ya, huh, huh?? FOUR YEARS! It's been four years since I read Sweetwater so I was awaiting this one. Oh yes, waiting and waiting!

And it did not disappoint!

It picks up right where Sweetwater left off, so you cannot read this without that one first, so, go back and get it!

Sofie has discovered Lucas' secret, he's a Vampire. Not just any Vampire, either, he is head of the Guard who keep the Kihn at bay. And they are getting restless. The Kihn are pushing as the date for the gate opening gets ever closer, but they still don't know WHERE it will open. Sofie has her own secret, one that might push Lucas away.

I have to say this, being all honest, like, cos that's what this is about: being honest. I don't remember only Sofie having a say in Sweetwater. I mean, 4 years folks! But she does here. AND it's in the first. AND it's in the present tense! So stuff that in your pipe and smoke it! Yes, me! Likes a first person, present tense book! Truthfully, I knew that, cos I mentioned it in my review for Sweetwater, that it's present tense. But yeah. Loved this one!

Of course I would have loved Lucas to have a say, really I would, but I'm just greedy!

Or I was loving it! Til Ms Jacks does her thing and throws you off the bloody cliff hanger of all cliff hangers!

There we were, Lucas and Sofie all loved up, doing their things to keep the Kihn away. Things are moving against the Kihn, the supes have found a way to disrupt their communications, so gaining a upper hand. Plans are a-foot. Great plans, amazing plans.

Then poof! You're off that cliff and hurtling down the ravine and you have no idea, NOT A SINGLE clue, when you can get back up again! Because, while Sweetwater was a great cliff hanger, this one?? OH. DEAR. LORD!!! I did not see that one coming, and my poor kindle, my new-at-Christmas kindle, had it's introduction to the wardrobe door! It's already been introduced to the wall, but the wardrobe was closer!

OH!!! It just occurred to me! While Lucas is a Vampire, and he and Sofie do get lots *fans herself* of sexy time *fans some more* there was no biting! He doesn't bite her, or feed, not once! HUH! A Vampire that doesn't bite! The randomest things come to you when writing reviews!

SO! Summing up?? Read the damn book, but brace yourself folks!

Hurry, Ms Jacks, I NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED book three. I need to know, not only if the Kihn are dealt with, but that things for Lucas and Sofie get sorted too.

5 full stars!

4 out of 5 (very good)

Now, I will be honest here, right up front, I only bought this book, because the author was giving away two additional books (from other authors) and it was a good deal.

Sofie returns to her childhood home, after the death of her parents. Parents who made it clear she was never wanted. Things are afoot in Sweetwater, and no one is quite sure what.

Lucas and his Hunters arrive to explain what is going on and how they are going to deal with it.

IT are the Kihn. while it isn't explained fully WHAT they are, they do get up to no good, what with a Gateway opening soon, near to Sweetwater. Sofie has knowledge of the Kihn, she has been seeing them in her dreams for years.

Enter a HUGE cast of supporting actors, witches, Wiccan, werewolves, guardian angels that only the Wiccan can see, various aunts, uncles, cousins and friends!!
The tale took a while to get going, Lucas and Sofie don't meet till almost half way through, and the blur comes with and explicit warning, which again, doesn't arrive til past half way, BUT its a good tale. Lots of interaction between all the characters, with more and MORE added along the way (this huge cast was one of the reasons it got 4 stars instead of 5, the other, the long warm up) Its a different tale and I enjoyed it. There is another planned and it will be purchased when its released, as this one ends on a bit of a cliff hanger!

I particularly liked the way Jacks throws things at you, just like that, "its the only way I know to keep them away, you know" made me go OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH what are "they"??? and how little hints get dropped along they way as to WHAT the supernatural people are. While its fairly obvious (after a time) what Lucas is, Sofie clicks in the last 3 lines of the book!

A different read, a good read, and I would recommend it!

And! It's present tense!

4 solid stars
